Nova Innovation
Nova Innovation is a world-leading tidal energy company; transforming the power of our seas into clean, predictable electricity. We design, build and operate tidal turbines that generate electricity from the natural ebb and flow of the tide.

2020
Nova celebrated its 10th birthday by successfully expanding the world’s first offshore tidal array in Shetland. A new direct-drive turbine that slashes the cost of tidal energy by a third has been added to the three turbines currently in the Array. Further expansion will double the capacity of the Shetland Tidal Array from three turbines to six.
2019
Nova secured power purchase agreements with utility company Nova Scotia Power to install 15 turbines in Nova Scotia, Canada.
2018
Nova partnered with Tesla to combine energy storage with its tidal turbine technology, creating the world’s first grid connected tidal power station. The station has the ability to deliver baseload (constant) and dispatchable (variable) power to meet demand.
2017
Nova won and started the EnFAIT project, the European Commission’s €20 million flagship tidal energy project to accelerate commercialisation, double the size of the Shetland Tidal Array by 2022 and enhance the sector's bankability.
2016
Nova successfully installed the world’s first offshore tidal array in Shetland, Scotland. Since 2016, the array of turbines has powered the Shetland grid with clean, predictable electricity, providing energy for the 22,000 people who live there.
2014
Nova installed its first tidal turbine, a 30 kW prototype, in Bluemull Sound, Shetland. The Nova 30 successfully supplied electricity to the grid and helped drive development of the larger 100 kW turbines.
2010
Nova was founded from humble beginnings - two people in a shed with a great idea and a global vision. The mission was to transform the power of the sea into clean, predictable electricity.
